It all started with compassion…and an old ambulance.

Hope Squad Maine delivers supplies, resources
and most importantly, humanity

The truth is, we had no idea where this would go. In 2022, we started with the idea to use the ambulance as a safe and warm place to listen, provide support and offer resources. Matt would hand out hot cocoa to just a few small tent sites. Larger encampments came out of nowhere as we progressed into 2023.

Before we knew it we were providing food, camping equipment, clothing, personal supply products and wound care supplies…all when it started with just hot cocoa.

Meet Matt & Nancy

Matt and Nancy are both DC natives who moved to Maine over 25 years ago. They have been married 35 years and have 3 adult children. Matt served as a law enforcement officer for 26 years, and since his retirement has worked as both a substance use counselor and peer support worker at Milestone Recovery and Spurwink crisis center, and as a funeral attendant for a local funeral home.

After a brief career in the US Government, Nancy focused on raising our family, as well as operating several successful home businesses.

Although Nancy had never done homeless outreach before, she jumped right in and has become the heart and soul of Hope Squad Maine, managing every aspect of its operations, in addition to being a calm, loving and supportive presence to all our friends on the street.
