What is Hope Squad Maine? by Board Member Kathleen Dobson

by | Jun 25, 2024

I remember driving down the road a while back, with a friend beside me, when we happened upon a homeless person asking for handouts at an intersection. My friend made derogatory comments along the lines of “Why doesn’t he just go get a job?! I don’t know why people give them any money at all …all they do is use it for drugs!” I’m sure you’ve heard that refrain, and maybe even said it! Admittedly, and embarrassingly, I have too. While feeling empathy for the situation, I just. didn’t. get it.

Over the last couple of years, I have learned a lot about the root causes of homelessness and what keeps them in this predicament. While politicians grease their wheels on solving the problem, and the numbers of those living on the streets keep escalating, and while things occur like the alarmingly inhumane “sweeps” forcibly shutting down encampments and destroying what little property and dignity the unhoused have, Matt and Nancy Brown have undertaken a novel approach to making a difference: Love.

Yes, Love. And, through love, miracles have come about. Read on to hear more about how Hope Squad Maine began, its journey to non-profit status, and how it is making a difference in the lives of human beings. Human beings just like us.
