Eve’s path to homelessness was shaped by a series of challenges. After leaving Maine for a knee replacement in Las Vegas, she experienced domestic violence in her marriage and an unhealthy relationship afterward. With help from her uncle, she returned to Maine but found herself stranded in a town without transportation. Eventually, she made her way to the Portland shelter, a place that brought its own struggles. The environment triggered painful memories from her past, including losses she had endured. While the food at the shelter was difficult for her, she found comfort in the snacks we distributed on Fridays, knowing they would help her through the weekend.
Eve wanted me to share that “…not everyone who ends up homeless is there because of addiction or because they did something bad. Sometimes, life just happens”. Her words are a powerful reminder to look beyond the stereotypes.
Despite these hardships, Eve’s spirit never wavered. She was always an enthusiastic bingo player, bringing energy and laughter to every game. Eve’s radiant smile and warm hugs became a source of joy for everyone around her. What stood out most to her regarding her time with Hope Squad was the reliability of our visits. “I noticed that it didn’t matter what the weather was—you always showed up,” she said. “It made me feel like I could depend on you.”
Now in her apartment, Eve is enjoying the peace and comfort of having a space to call her own. She’s grateful for the chance to decorate her space, cook her own meals, welcome a support kitten, and have the quiet she longed for. This new chapter is full of hope, and Eve’s journey inspires us all.
Her story is a testament to the importance of compassion, trust, and consistency. It reminds us why we do what we do—to build relationships that help our friends move forward when they’re ready. As Eve settles into her new life, we will continue to celebrate her victories and remain by her side, just as she knows we always will.
