Just a few weeks ago, I found myself feeling deeply discouraged. Our beloved ambulance, into which we had invested so much time, effort, and money, had blown its engine on the highway. As I researched newer, more reliable options, I realized that purchasing another ambulance would drain nearly all our resources. Many suggested a cargo van — easier to maintain, perhaps, but the ambulance had proven invaluable during encampment sweeps and harsh winters. It provided warmth, privacy, and dignity to those in need. Still, I wondered: Was it worth holding onto this vision?
In the midst of my uncertainty, I received a message from a young woman who has faced homelessness, substance use disorder, and severe medical challenges. She recalled a night when she was scared, alone, and a storm was approaching: “I saw that ambulance, and I ran as fast as I could… they got me to safety that night. I will never forget that.” Her words moved me to tears and reminded me of the unique role the ambulance plays, both practically and emotionally, as a true beacon of hope.
Not long after, several generous gifts arrived from unexpected places, allowing us to purchase a newer ambulance without exhausting our funds. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, our “beacon of hope” is back on the road, ready to continue its mission of providing safety, comfort, and care to those who need it most. As that young woman so beautifully put it, “The ambulance was a beacon of hope for me,” and now, thanks to you, it will continue to be for many others.
That amazing young woman went to the shelter, then detox, residential treatment and sober living. She is now a manager in her sober house, and is about to see her children again. We are so proud to know and be friends with this incredibly strong and loving woman.
