Since joining Hope Squad Maine in the fall of 2023, Fran has quickly become a passionate advocate for Portland’s homeless community. Growing up in the West End, she developed a deep bond with the city that continues to draw her back despite living close to an hour away. A personal experience—a friend facing homelessness—sparked her involvement, prompting her to start collecting donations and coordinating support efforts,
Fran does an incredible job spreading the word about Hope Squad Maine among her family and friends, rallying both financial and physical donations. As one of the original members of our outreach team, she’s been a tremendous help to the organization and remains a dedicated volunteer, affectionately known as our beloved “bingo lady” at the shelter.
Driven by justice, pursuit of fairness, and genuine compassion, Fran finds fulfillment in the small, meaningful moments of outreach. Whether it’s sharing a smile or a quiet exchange of understanding, she believes that even a brief connection can brighten someone’s day. “I know I can’t change the world,” she reflects, “but I can make a difference in the moment.”
For Fran, volunteering with Hope Squad Maine isn’t just about giving back—it’s also a way to overcome her own struggles with mental health challenges and physical illness by fostering community and connection. She values the collaboration between various organizations, knowing that a united community is better equipped to support those in need, and is passionate about educating others on the challenges faced by Portland’s homeless population.
Yet, the work has not been without hardship. Fran recalls the harrowing experience of the Commercial Street encampment sweep, when she rushed to help residents salvage their belongings before front end loaders could destroy them. That moment remains a powerful reminder for her of the urgency of our mission.
Fran’s ongoing commitment exemplifies how small acts of kindness can ignite meaningful change, one day at a time.
