Every week, HSM’s Clothing Team quietly performs a vital act of care—sorting donations, prepping bins, loading the ambulance, and making sure neighbors have access to clean, comfortable clothing.
During outreach, our team helps folks find what they need—whether it’s a warm sweatshirt, dry socks, or something that simply fits. Sometimes it’s survival. Other times, it’s a spark of joy.
“When someone lights up because a pair of pants actually fits them, you realize—it’s not just about staying warm. It’s about feeling seen,” shared volunteer Jill Tabbutt.
Donated items that aren’t suitable for outreach—like dress clothes—are sent to Madlyn’s Consignment Shop in Portland. Thanks to Karen, proceeds from sales (often $1,500–$2,000 a year!) go right back into purchasing socks, underwear, and other essentials.

A Special Thanks to Zahira and the South Portland Church of the Nazarene for providing the fabulous space we have for sorting and storing backup supplies. They’ve been incredibly accommodating, letting us use shelving, tables, and cabinets, and even offering access to clothing items they have available. We are so grateful for this generous partnership.

Have items that aren’t suitable for street outreach?
You can drop off like-new, in-season items at Madlyn’s New & Used Consignment Shop (38 Market Street, Portland) to be considered for consignment. Ask that the proceeds go to Hope Squad Maine.
