There are many ways each of us can help our unhoused neighbors. Making eye contact, sharing a smile, handing out blessing bags and/or $5.00 food & coffee gift cards are small acts of kindness that can make a big difference to our neighbors in need.
Donating time, funds and material resources to local non-profit organizations that connect with the homeless population are all meaningful ways to support positive change for those who are at risk and unsheltered.
However, one of the most important things you can do to help is to use your voice to advocate for those who cannot speak up for themselves.
While Hope Squad Maine is not a political organization and does not engage in political advocacy, we believe it is important to stay informed about issues that directly affect the well-being of our community’s most vulnerable citizens.
Right now, they are facing cuts to food stamps and healthcare coverage as well as the potential elimination of various housing voucher programs. These cuts will push more people onto the streets while reducing support to assist those currently unhoused with survival and exiting homelessness.
How you can help:
Contact your municipal, state and federal lawmakers to let them know that ending homelessness is important to you. (Note: contact information for town selectmen and city council members can be found through the town or city hall or website.)
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to encourage others to do the same. Focusing your efforts locally can yield quicker results.
In your communications be sure to Include relevant personal experiences and share the following key points and requests for action:
- Criminalizing homelessness wastes tax dollars and disconnects people from the critical services that provide a path out of homelessness.
- Blaming individuals, rather than responding to homelessness as a housing and public health crisis Is an ineffective, expensive and inhumane approach.
- Ask decision makers to support programs and policies with proven success such as consistent, accessible emergency shelter (every municipality needs a plan for local emergency shelter), Housing First programs with wrap-around support services, affordable housing and healthcare.
- Request a humane, effective, and affordable housing–focused approach to ending homelessness — one that addresses the root economic challenges that impact us all.
Thank you for being a voice for the voiceless!
